John on Meet the Candidates

John's Bio

Politics and Community Activism

John has been involved in politics and community advocacy for all of his adult life. He served two terms as a Ward City Counselor in Marlborough as a champion of his neighbors tax dollars and environment. He was a founding member and president of the Boys and Girls Club in Marshfield from 1999 to 2003. He has worked tirelessly for the betterment of his communities as a recycling advocate on the Solid Waste Committee and a primary member of the Rail Trail Group that eventually founded the Trails and Ways committee. John's work with all these organizations has given him a solid background as an advocate that will fight for healthy sustainable communities

John's personal involvement with politics began with the two terms he served as an independent candidate for Ward City Counselor in Marlborough. Beginning in 1985 and ending 1989, John worked tirelessly for his neighbors to provide them a better community and more intelligent spending of their tax dollars. As Ward City Counselor John fought to keep property taxes low and worked to curb unwise spending. He worked with developers to encourage intelligent planning that preserved historical landmarks and developed healthy sustainable neighborhoods. John also began his track record of environmental activism by supporting noise ordinances for the city to improve the quality of life for all of Marlborough's residences for the benefit of all his constituents.

This commitment to the community continued when John moved into Marshfield in 1996. Perhaps his proudest achievement as an community activist in Marshfield is founding the Boys and Girls club of Marshfield. John had been involved in the Boys and Girls Club since he was child. The movement for establishing the club began in 1999 and through diligent work they were incorporated into the Boys and Girls Club family in a year and a half. He served as the clubs first president from 1999-2003, and continues to work as an advocate today. He is proud to see that the club has gone from its humble beginnings that filled a small room in the Ventress Library to servicing over 900 members. John feels strongly that communities should provide children with safe places to learn and play. He believes the Boys and Girls club provides that opportunity with little impact to the taxpayer, and fully supports there effort to build a new facility in Marshfield.

Aside from his work for the Boys and Girls Club John has worked in the Solid Waste Advisory committee. On the solid waste advisory committee he worked to increase Marshfield's curbside recycling while looking out for the taxpayer's so that costs didn't increase for the average family. As a member he forced compromise between the different factions on the board over how to implement pay as you throw as well as other curbside options. Thanks to John's involvement the residents of marshfield recieved a choice at town meeting over what program they could use.

Aside from his work with the Solid Waste Committee, John also worked with the town and through the chamber of commerce to reinstate and promote rid litter day in Marshfield. He was also a primary member of the Rail-Trail interest group in Marshfield that advocated for and eventually established a The Trails and Ways committee within the town of marshfield to maintain and improve existing nature trails, greenways, and pedestrian paths and promote alternative means of travel. As a state representative John will continue his track record for environmental policies that protect and improve our communities.
